Well, considering I've just spent the past hour researching narcissism in the workplace in order to attempt to deal with my insane boss, I'm going to have to go with - it doesn't make society more efficient, so the rest of the question is just hypothetical. It may work temporarily, but long-term it stifles innovation too much and dies out.
