There are some emotions I will never have to deal with in owning a cat.  I'll never have to worry about my cats success as a person once he leaves my care.  But that is just because he can't go to college or hold a job.  However, how much I care about making him happy, and how much i'd be willing to sacrifice to save him, I bet you is the same.

I have a lot of friends who like Genki a lot and would gladly take care of him.

Oh yeah, he'd grow attatched to somebody else.  I know he doesn't have the capacity to really care deeply about me.  Right now he is heavily attatched to me, but he can adapt.  I don't mind that he is that way, he is a cat, i just care about making him happy.

also, you do realize that you will outlive Genky.  and will have to deal with that sometime.

the liklihood of my children outliving me is great. 
the revers is a situation i would not want to live through.  you on the other hand will be forced, in all likelihood, to have to cope with at some point.

cats don't have the same loyalty thing that dogs have (unless you get something like a maine coon, drool, slaver, want one).  they're cruel, arrogant, evil fuckers.  which is, naturally, why i love them so.

I constantly love talk to genki about what i'm gonna do once he's dead(i consider it well adjusted to accept the death of people and not be sad(excessively) about it).  Just because he is a cat doesn't mean I can't love him enough to be willing to die for him.

and the only point of gerbils, as far as i can see, is to die, so young children can learn about death, and/or so parents can exercise their brains working out how to replace the little fuckers with a facsimile, before litle johnny/jemima notices...

at least hamsters can draw blood.

i agree, nomaken - people underestimate the attachment people have for their pets.  it's too personal for anyone else to understand, on some levels.

I could explain exactly why I value genki so much, but I asked mcjagger to explain how he gains happiness from his children.  He said it was very personal, but me loving my cat is very personal and I can totally explain it.
