AS and Alcohol
« on: February 13, 2008, 09:53:07 AM »
I have been arriving at many conclusions lately.  One is that I think my drinking problem is related to AS.  For many reasons.

It makes the awkwardness more bearable.

It makes it easier to express deep emotions.

It helps me to forget the stupid mistakes I have made.  (Although it leads to just as many stupid mistakes).

It seems to make me feel more normal, to fit in socially.

Any other thoughts on this subject.

BTW, I've decided to stop drinking, and have to come up with other ways of coping, expressing, fitting in.
Feeling neutral is very normal.

I too, love being drunk.  But I don't like doing somethinkg for reasons unknown to me.  Which has pretty much been happening my whole life.  I'm trying to be much more intentional with my actions.

Like something else I do; feel compelled to respond to every post on my topics.  So I'm going to stop that, and only reply when I feel it is more intentional, than reactionary.

I would agree with most of this, the feeling of fitting in, the relaxation to not feel awkward in social situations.  I can't say that it has helped me forget the stupid mistakes I'v made, but, it has lead to stupid mistakes on my part.  I was never much of a drinker anyway, I couldn't afford to do so regularly for a long time.  I never really had that strong an urge to drink, even though there is alcoholism in my family.  Plus, I was never one to "Hold" my liquor.  It never took much to get me drunk and then I'd get real sick.  So for years, I never did that much and even when I did only lightly.  Especially if I was driving or doing something else after.

Anywho, Kudos on your decision to stop drinking.  Thats never an easy thing to do.  I'v done many detox protocols on many an alcoholic as a nurse.  There are other ways of coping and expressing, what you need to do is find a GOOD counselor who is familiar with AS and related things.  I was lucky I did.    Good luck!

Being drunk and/or high is fun to me.  One part of me liking alcohol is the belief that it makes me more effective socially.
:P   Internets are super serious.

I don't drink.

Do you do anything else compuslively that may be driven by AS that you may not have identified yet?

I used to be the kid that answered every question the teacher asked, just because I thought I was supposed to.  Most teachers didn't mind this.  I sometimes felt like the only kid in class.  I'm sure everyone else thought I was weird.

I also used to have a fixation with going to bed by 9 pm, and would become stressed out if I didn't.

I have a long list of stuff like this.

I tend to think OCD is related to Asperger's.  I know I have a lot of routines and habits that people think are rigid.  Alcohol aslo allowed me to disregard my drive to have the patterns, it allowed me to deviate from a lot of my habits.  But in the end, the alcohol patterns became a pattern.  Ironic isn't it?

That makes sense.  Your pysche was trying to catch up for lost time, it seems.  I have some bothersome habits, but I do feel bad for people with OCD.  I annoy my wife because I ALWAYS use my turn signal, even when no one is around, even leaving the driveway, but its not anything like OCD.

my ocd is horrible. it's one of the things that contributes to my depression i think. i've been in bed nearly 18 hours straight at the moment, just to avoid doing ocd stuff

I drink socially. To deal with people.
Sometimes to excess. Been drinking alone
recently, which I don't really like - but it
gives me something in between cups of
tea. :-\
