and why is it bad for WP members to know? Is Alex afraid of losing members because they might get too paranoid to post thinking they might get banned?

Alex can stop banning people for their opinions and all sorts and only ban the trouble makers such as flamers and spammers and trolls.

It's probably that Alex is even more afraid of losing money when people realize that other people whom they like and respect have been banned from WP.  A lot of people send Alex money to "Support WP" (I think Richard may be one of them) and in addition Alex gets money from the ads on WP, so the more people he can claim, the more money he gets.

He doesn't lose members since he refuses to delete the accounts of those he has banned from the site. I've repeatedly asked him to delete my account, without any luck.

Of course, what it boils down to is the money and the image he wants to convey. A membership comprising several thousand people is good for both. Only the admins can find out how many of those are banned or sockpuppets.
