I want an Exoskeleton
« on: November 28, 2007, 02:46:04 PM »
A friend posted this on another forum.   This looks like an interesting development.   I want one, just so I can throw things that weigh more than me.

Wonder how long the self contained battery ones will last on a charge

that's sick. they are planning to kill humans with it.

it is a cool piece of machinery, like the one Ripley used to kill the alien, but it shouldn't be used in war, then the other side makes the same robots and then soon we'll have something out of Terminator on our bloody hands. ::)

that thing could be used to help people.

It will be a long time before that happens I think the military and the construction industry will use it more like in Aliens as a material handler

Yeah. It's NOT an efficient tool to kill with.
However, some of the tech involved could
well be used to design battle suits. Essentially,
one man tanks. Not sure how much of an advantage
those would be though. I've seen arguments for, but
they don't really add up.

The exoskeleton would be completely useless in a non-combative function.  I mean moving crap around, lifting weights.  It's what Cal said.. it'll be to move body armor around.  Virtually impenetrable body armor would be heavy as shit, hence the exoskeleton.  The exoskeleton is just that, they're going to add the skin later.

If you paid attention to the end of the film you would see prototypes for the battle suit with skin on it.   They will make the Exo-skeleton then add skin on the outside of it that will be impenetrable.   Basically what Telsa said haha.   This will be used to kill people first most likely, then later it will be used to help lol.

I can think of plenty of  non-combative uses for instance rescue work,  material handling where forklifts would be unpractical, loading bombs on planes on carriers which is still done mostly by hand.  Powered armor could be a use but it won't be the first use and the expense will restrict that for awile

Connection is too crappy to make it far.  :(

No doubt. I don't even know that powered armor makes a lot
of sense, EXCEPT for street fighting type situations - places where
a tank's gonna have trouble.

Basically this makes the Mjolnir/Spartan armor of Halo and the Hazmat suit of Half Life somewhat feasible in the future.   Well at least the super strong suit that makes the user incredibly resistant to gunfire part.

It would also be good if armored and shielded for work in hazardous environments say in the nuclear industry.  Use by elite type troops in close quarters would come first in the combat type role

That is why I mentioned the Hazmat suit from Half Life as it was originally intended in the game to handle hazardous materials.   This suit could be great for all sorts of applications really.   It might be quite some time before we see stuff like this used all over the place though.
