Two of the things I remember learning in Catholic school (1950's - 60's) was

A) When you attend another parish church (e.g. on vacation) you don't put any money in the collection plate.  You only give to your parish church.

B) When you attend another faith's service you sit there, respectfully, and do not participate in the service.  That is what I do when I have to attend mass. 

 I remember my family went to an Episcopal wedding, and my mother cautioned us not to take Communion there.

Yeah, that sounded like my grandmothers way of doing things.   

 My mother is old-school ... Irish Catholic family, grew up in the 1930s and 40s, taught catechism for years.
