He seemed like a bit of a needy negative type. I was being careful not to get too emotionally involved with him (I was scared I'd get obsessed with/too attached to him or something if I did)

Waggy was very clingy when she was a puppy, and I used to leave the bathroom door open so that she could come in and sit next to me while I showered.  If I closed it, she'd either claw at it to get in or out, depending on which side of the door she was on.
