Listening to Morrissey + Reading about Depression = Very Bad Idea.

morrissey and the smiths always cheer me up no end, so i don't have that problem.  ;D

Toss Richard Thompson into my mix and I'm there.

Other of my reactions to music and art in general are not really mainstream, either.

That depressing fucker always cheers me up.

oh richard thompson is fabulous - whether he's miserable or not, he's so clever, it makes me laugh.

Yep.

Love him, but I have never understood why he's not more popular in the USA.  I rarely meet anyone who has ever heard of him - forget finding another person who owns nearly all his music.

I'v heard and  listened to enough of his music to say, I don't like him.  His version of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" is awful.  To me he just proves Dave Barry's comment that music is subjective.  I can't stand him and you like him.  Which is cool!  It just proves Duke Ellington's quote, "If it sounds good, it is good!"

Seriously, when a song of his comes on the radio, I shift channels or hit the MUTE button.  That is just me!

Depends how you look at them:

Stepchild, you have outlived your time
You represent embarrassment and failure
And the father who must be killed
Is the blight upon your blighted life
And his might is his legal right
To ground you down

Stepchild, with every petty swipe
You just might find you're fighting for your life
And the father who must be killed
Is a step farther but nonetheless
The way he chews his food
Rips right through your senses

Stepchild, there's a knife in a drawer in a room downstairs
And you, you know what you must do
So the stepchild ran with a knife to his sleeping frame
And slams it in his arms, his legs, his face, his neck and says
"There's a law against me now"
And the father who must be killed
With his dying breath, he grabs her hand
And he looks into her eyes
He says "I'm sorry" and he dies

"Stepchild, I release you
With this broken voice I beseech you"

"Why are lives so short?"
The stepchild thought heart pointing to the sky
"No warm to warm me
No hand to touch me
And no Bible-Belters to mess with me
Momma don't miss me
Momma don't miss me
This death will complete me"
"But where I go there will be no one to meet me
I know there will be no one to meet me"
But still the step-child press the knife to her throat
Heart pointing to the sky
"Just as mother-less birds fly high
Then so shall I
So shall I
So shall I
So shall I
So shall I"

So am I, recently. It may be time to go back into the real world.

BUT, I agree, but the unreal world makes a nice diversion and does serve a purpose.  IRL, it's all about the balance.  I have become fascinated by the concept of of YIN/YANG recently.  Amber has embraced Taoism/zen as her philosophy about life, and in many ways the daughter teaches the parent that there may be more than one way to look at life or embrace it's complexities.  Pragmatism, zen,  ???  who knows?  It's what I strive for, balance, YIN/YANG, the search for sense or wisdom continues.

Do let me know if your patron, calandale has any ideas on this!   8)
