Cloves have numbing properties, antioxidant properties, and antibacterial properites. 
Ginger  and red peppers contain counterirritants, that means they diminsh deeper pain.  Make a compress, by putting  enough water to make a paste.  Dip a cotton ball in the paste.  Touch the spot not your gum.  If you can't stand the heat rinse your mouth out.

I've heard about ginger before, but I live in the suburbs and it's hard finding some decent ginger over here.
