Funny,

That picture reminds me of a Chinese geographist visitor we once had. He nearly passed out when he saw a German in Germany, while still on Dutch ground. When we suggested taking a stroll into Germany and back, he almost died.
I still see him excitedly shouting about it.

We just walk over the border to Norway as well. One of my dad's friends has his house immediately to the border.  :viking:

Such pretty countryside...I don't know what I was expecting, vast frozen fjords I suppose.

Yes, here too, there are farmers with land on both sides of the border. No problem.

I once went with the family of a friend to do grocery-shopping in Germany. I had no passport with me, but who cared, you never got checked. That time we did get checked. They wanted to see everything in the car. We had to get out. All bags had to be opened. But somehow it did not bother the customs that there were five people in the car, and only four ID's. They did not even mention it.

That was taken in the summer. In January there would probably be lots of snow there.

Since 1946 we don't need a passport within the Nordic countries. Though the customs may check your car, of course. There are very few custom stations but they patrol the border every know and then.

The only passports controls I remember are those to France, the UK and the GDR.

There was hardly any difference between getting into France and into the GDR.
Heavily armed men and dogs. Getting out of France was easier than getting out of the GDR though. Apparently they were not afraid we'd smuggle people or things out of France.  :P

You were probably smuggling snails and garlic.  :orly:

When you get to the Frankfurt airport from abroad nowadays, German shepherd dogs sniff you and they X-ray your shoes.  :-\

Snails and garlic into France?

Good idea, next time I have to go there, I'll try smuggling a bucket of my garden snails in.

Those cowardly French will capitulate for the Dutch snails, no doubt.  :viking:
