Few corrections  :P. Australia is a part of the commonwealth not a commonwealth. We do have tornados but they mostly occur in the central areas where the population is small so therefore you hear very little about them.

We have small tornadoes called Willy Willies.
I saw one last week in Beeaufort, western Victoria.

Why don't I care? Because it missed you. :(

If it had hit me (it was only 50 metres away) I might have got a bit dusty.

I'm glad you're concerned for my well being :-*

I was concerned about your demise. Planned a party and everything. :(

Why was I not invited?

Most states build wooden houses...WA builds houses almost entirely out of bricks.

Wooden houses used to be built a lot in Australia, nowadays Brick is the construction material, few new houses are built with wood.

I have not seen many steel frame houses in Victoria.

The most common houses are timbre frames and a brick veneer.

That's what my house is, but I live in the US.

Yes in Queensland it is mostly woodenframe houses on stilts with plasterboard walls inside.

Elsewhere it is generally the woodframe, single outer brick veneer design and more recently, steel inner frame due to problems with termites.

Why are they on stilts?  Does it flood often in Queensland?

1. houses are built on hillside.
2. air circulates under house, cooling effect.

Houses are silly. I want a nice centrally heated cave, with all the amenities (ie: Net)

It would be nice to live underground, although I think I would like to live in the side of a hill more for the natural light.

From Wikipedia:
Quote
Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. At the 2006 census its population was 1,916 (1084 males, 832 females, including 268 indigenous Australians). The town is known as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. The name 'Coober Pedy' comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means "boys' waterhole"

Most people there live underground to avoid the extreme heat.
