Her Majesty could always cross the pond for things like that. Similar, but not the same. A visit to a "Hollandse gebakkraam" would be able to relieve your cravings.

Just looked at a recipe for Louisiana beignets. They might taste closer to the origin of a doughnut than a doughnut does.

* Ponders on making Louisiana beignets for new years eve. *

Just groceries and a folded up bag that can be used whenever a bag is needed. Like when I go to the second hand shop.

I wonder if it's the same sort of bag?  The one I bought ($2) folds up really small. It's purple and black and I like that.

Since January the first of last year shops are not allowed to give free plastic tote bags anymore. Amazing how quickly people adapted to that. Most of them carrying some folded up bags with them.
Looks better not seeing all those brands everywhere too. And the folded up bags come in all kinds of colours and designs.

There's less plastics in the streets now.

Tote bags here can come in thin material meant to be folded up, but a lot of them are just canvas bags with long handles that go over your shoulder.

Here's one I bought on sale. Not my favourite colours. I meant to take it back but forgot. It's still cute.

Having trouble finding a picture that will show here.  Here's part of the Wiki entry.

Beignet (English: /bɛnˈjeɪ/; French: [bɛɲɛ], ben-YAY literally bump),[1] synonymous with the English "fritter", is the French term for a pastry made from deep-fried choux pastry.[2] Beignets may also be made from other types of dough, including yeast dough.

Beignets are commonly known in New Orleans as a breakfast served with powdered sugar on top.[2] They are traditionally prepared right before consumption to be eaten fresh and hot. Variations of fried dough can be found across cuisines internationally; however, the origin of the term beignet is specifically French. In the United States, beignets have been popular within New Orleans Creole cuisine and are customarily served as a dessert or in some sweet variation. They were brought to New Orleans in the 18th century by French colonists,[4] from "the old mother country", and became a large part of home-style Creole cooking, variations often including banana or plantain – popular fruits in the port city.  Today, Café du Monde is a popular New Orleans food destination specializing in beignets with powdered sugar, coffee with chicory, and café au lait. Beignets were declared the official state doughnut of Louisiana in 1986.

Exit Wikepedia - Traditionally they were made at two locations in the French Quarter that sold only beignets and cafe au lait.  Not too many places other than these two sell them because a) they have to be eaten fresh and b) they need to be cooked fresh in their own oil.   They're not sweet in themselves, and so powdered sugar is lavishly sprinkled on them.  My family always called putting the sugar on as "spanking the baby" because you need to hit the bottom of the sugar cannister.  This post is getting too long and detailed now, so just take it from me, they're good.

Oh, they're something like a Mexican sopapilla (sp?).  Except sopapillas have honey put on them.

What I saw in Louisiana and new Orleans recipes was more of a yeast dough than a choux pastry dough.

In the Netherlands dough for beignets is often way more liquid. More like a yeast batter. Most commonly used to emerge appleslices (with a hole where the pips were) in. The covered apple gets fried, becoming an applebeignet, or appelflap.

Batter/dough for oliebollen is thicker than the Dutch beignet batterij, but thinner than the New Orleans beignet dough.

But they need to be eaten freshly baked indeed. And dusted with powdered sugar.

New year's Eve lots of people will bake them. Everywhere it will smell of oliebollen. Other times in the year people buy them at driving bakeries, the "Hollandse gebakkraam". There will be one or two of those at most big market places or fairs.

Hyke, I agree that it didn't sound like a choux recipe, more like a sweet scone/biscuit that is fried.  The whole secret to New Orleans beignets is in the powdered (confectioners) sugar.  Ideally it should really be put on thickly.  And NEVER wear black or else everyone will know where you ate.

I think it's so like New Orleans that we have 2 places, the Mornging Call and Cafe du Monde (one has moved to Metairie because they lost their lease) that sell only beignets and coffee/milk and both are over 100 years old.  How can you make a living selling such a limited menu and how can the waiters make a living on such a small order cost?  I haven't been in years but I think an order of beignets (3) and a cup of coffee wouldn't be much over $5 or $6.  But the table turnover is good and they're open 24 hours except for Christmas.

Powdered sugar is a must indeed.

Do the beignets come in different flavours? Or do they only sell plain ones?

Only plain ones that I know of.

I looked it up.  Cafe du Monde has been in business since 1862 and Morning Call since 1870.

Beignets taste like funnel cake.

They're probably not as crispy as funnel cake.  I've only had funnel cake once and it was too crispy for me and had cinnamon sugar on it.  I try to avoid cinnamon whenever possible because I don't like it.  I will make cinnamon sugar toast for a sweet treat towards the end of the month.
