That must be a European thing. In North America, both the sedans and wagons are 850s. I always liked the 240. Those things are bulletproof.

Volvo used to have a last digit for the number of doors: 142 and 242 had two doors, 144 and 244 had 4 and 145 and 245 hade 5; i.e. they were wagons. After the 940 series, which actually came before the 850, they usually stopped to put in the last digit, except for the wagons.

The 240 is a bit boring but very reliable and safe, like an old faithful dog. I have had two of them.

The 850 and forwards are a new generation in the Volvo family, since they have either FWD or AWD. Before that all Volvos except for a few experimental ones were always RWD.

The Swedish Instrument of Government from 1634, which among other things created most counties that still exist to this day, was never ratified properly, since no Swedish monarch accepted it.
