Ah. That's different.

Maybe, but I have not always tried for the "leave no trace"  goal. Even before there were companies making money from people's Carbon Guilt, selling Carbon Forgiveness in the form of personalized tree planting projects (complete with little placards inscribed with the names of the guilty fools who have given the companies money for offsetting people's guilt which has developed from media exposure of their continued use of big SUVs), I was an avid tree planter.

It has always been a fascinating thing to me to nurture a seed and I can never get enough of this. I was particularly intrigued by the challenge of bringing to life those shy, hesitant, "double dormant" seeds, which take more than one year to germinate.
It's not so easy anymore, though, because most of the parks here are no longer left to the wild. They are landscaped to meet a set of standards created some city planning commission. I can no longer just randomly go around in early spring stomping-in tree seedlings where they are needed. They can't stop me from my habit of stealth-broadcasting of native wildflower seeds, though.

My random factoid of the day is that I have three different to-do lists and a couple dozen stickies currently sitting around my computer waiting to be taken care of.

So, you got a larger monitor in order to keep better tabs on all the ways that you procrastinate?

I need a bigger garage/work area for the same reason.

Procrastination? I prefer to think of it as shooting for the moon.  :P And they're actually physical stickies - I have an annoying habit of coming up with my best ideas when I'm on the clock for something entirely different, so I spend a lot of the day scribbling things down, ripping them off and shoving them in my bag before some coworker notices the errant flow of passion.

I have only one seed I'm attempting to nurture at the moment. Actually it's a cutting, and I can't figure out if it's slowly dying or struggling to make roots and come back. There are three leaves, two are yellowish but still thick and have stubbornly not fallen off. It's in the sun and has a little soil at the bottom and I haven't a clue how moist to keep it.

I have no sense for this yet.

Did you use rooting hormone on your clipping?  If not, it's too late now, because it must be used in the first few hours after the cutting is taken or it will not be absorbed into the tissues. Not all types of plants need it though. Either way, don't give up. Get some help from science, if necessary.
Direct sun is generally not right for rootless clippings, though. It will be fine with indirect sun, until it has a root or two. There will be no photosynthesis, until a root forms, so the sun does nothing but dry it out (although direct sun does hinder some fungal colonies which are your main enemy).  Warmth from below (the rooting media should be kept warmer than the surrounding air), high humidity in the surrounding air (in the neighborhood of one hundred percent humidity is usually best, so this means a covering) and sterile conditions, especially freedom from fungi are the most important things to provide when taking cuttings. (I actually scrub up and use surgeons gloves when I take cuttings and all my containers, scissors and coverings have been boiled and the cuttings are immediately dipped into a container of fresh growth hormone to aide in rooting, then placed immediately into sterile media and covered with glass. Obviously, there are certain types of plants, especially woody perennials that are not so picky. For instance, I have seen willow, basically any salix, prunings root right into the ground where they were thrown.) The only other major concern is the time of year you took your cutting. Plants are naturally loaded with growth and especially rooting hormones in spring. In the fall, plants are generally trying to go dormant and cuttings may not root well.

Even if your cutting does not "take" (grow roots)  do not abandon the idea of starting our own plants. There are very few plants that can not be propagated asexually (as in taking cuttings). The most important benefit to this type of propagation is that the plant you root will have the exact same DNA and growth/color/size and flowering habits (and all other characteristics) as the parent plant. It will be an exact copy.

My most recent successes in growing from cuttings have been Clematis. I took multiple cuttings from seven different cultivars last year and I have at least one plant successfully dormant, all outdoors, from all seven types. One of the Chinese types I have, all five of the cuttings I took rooted successfully.

How would I know if fungus was hurting it? Is there anything that could be seen?

I had no idea rooting hormone existed and it's too late now. I can cover it though and put it on something black for heat. I didn't want to make it too wet because I thought that might make it grow mold, and because I think the adult plant is supposed to be kept fairly dry, but that could easily be wrong. It's one of these. It had one root about an inch long before I took it out of water and put it in soil instead. I can't see through the soil how the root is doing, but the yellow leaves got me worried.

...another useless fact: I am two blocks down from Callaway Dr.

Not until it's too late, unfortunately. Fungus spores are generally microscopic and the damage they cause, due to their parasitic use of the plant tissues, is microscopic until it goes so far that even we "numb humans"  can see it.

Cover it, keep it moist, hope it was sterile. That's about all you can do, now. Still, don't give up. It WILL work, once you meet its needs.

BTW, your link does not work. I have no idea what plant you are trying to root. I may have experience rooting hundreds of plants, but there are literally hundreds of millions of species that respond well to asexual reproduction efforts. I am not a good source. Read up on your specific plant.

... and try again!!

Good points. I will.

I looked back at your link and at least I now know which plant you are trying to grow. Philodendrons are usually easy to propagate asexually. I have seen women drop a stem into a mason jar of water, set it in the window, with no accounting whatsoever for the plant's needs, and they will still root.

I have a Monstera, which is closely related, that I started from a haphazardly broken-off piece of stem I found in a pizza place then brought home in my pocket.

Good luck!

I have just gotten off the phone with my brother. He is preparing to attend the convention of music educators where they are going to honor our father next week for his life's work. He is taking his son, who will tape the entire ceremony for me to watch.

He is THE MAN!

... my little brother, taking the heat for me. He's awesome!

I was afraid from the beginning that I would not be able to handle all that

I, no I, noI ...no,  I am the only, anal retentive, Holier-Than-Thou (nods to milla) CUNT who has actually cleared his entire walkway (Mine is three times larger than any other save for the preacher across the street who keeps a coffin and a Harley Fatboy in his garage).

A winner is me!!
