My shitty, modern coffee maker has gone on the fritz, lost its mind and failed.

A few days ago, I began using an old Pyrex, clear glass percolator. This morning, I carefully reformed and adapted my gold plated coffee strainer, which I bought for the Braun, to replace the stainless steel strainer that came originally with the old pot.

First cup since the re-fit is brewing now.

That does look brave, but mine is like this ... very American. In fact every single piece is inscribed (not really inscribed, because it is moulded into the glass, and stamped on the stainless steel rim that holds the handle), "Made in USA,"  made  back when stating such really meant a product of higher quality.

The bottom of the "coffee holding area," which is frictionally attached, originally made from stainless steel, is what I replaced with a coffee-lover's gold plated screen.

It makes outstanding coffee. :headbang2:

This one was my grandfather's, bought in the early sixties (I was approaching puberty), and my mum had it for many years after he died.

It is mine, now and I can NOT justify my NOT using it for over ten years. I actually own another one, just like it, as a back-up, but it was one I found at a garage sale.

It has been sitting atop my kitchen cabinets as an ornament since my kids were born.

:embarrassed as fuck!:

The one above was very common in Sweden in the '60s and '70s. I still use them to this day. No filter, no metal taste, very high temperature. No need for cleaning with other than water.

What's the spring looking thing inside the riser?

Mine sits on my convection cooktop with no protection and the only metal the liquid sees is the strainer screen.

My grandfather (who I suspect was exactly like me - atypical autistic spazz) usually left the insides out and just dumped the grounds into the pot and set the thing on a wood burning stove. He did not mind some chewy-gooies in his brew.

The spring is to hold a plate, which works as a filter, in place. It's actually a kind of vacuum filtration.  8)

Cool.

BTW, keeping a wood burning stove in your living room, like my grandfather did, is brave. Wood stacked nearby, with no accounting for feminine interior decorating schemes, is also brave.

He also came home after a hunt and cleaned all his guns in the living room, warming his feet by the stove.

My grandfather gutted his kills on the porch, but he skinned, dressed, butchered, and packaged his kills on the kitchen table.

Most of his mechanical stuff, tractor oriented, happened in his barn.

I can actually "speak cat". Its almost like when a baby can't really talk yet but as their parent, you know what they are trying to say. I could actually understand my cats completely, and knew how to "meow" back at them the right way.

When I was a little younger, I used to curl up with my cat poco, and sort of roll around like she did. I think I must actually be part cat, or maybe had been a cat in a past life.

I comprehend a number of insect languages, some prey animals, but mostly I "speak" dog.

I seem to do OK understanding my cats through the years, but I can't seem to make them understand me or really care what I want for that matter.

Dogs are completely owned by my way of vocal, hand and eye movements, though. I think dogs are incredibly intelligent. I have encountered several bears, when I lived in Tennessee and in my travels on foot through Idaho, Colorado, up through Northern Canada, but they seem reluctant to engage with humans, despite their intelligence. They think of us as enemy competitors and they mostly want us to go away.
Dogs seem to regard us as really smart dogs and they will follow us, due tho their pack instincts.

I have no concept of what it would be like to speak cat and get some kind of response, other than a lift of a tail or a shift of an ear and a wink.

All kinds of shit. Theres the happy chirp, which is like "WHERE ARE YOU?" or "HERE I AM". Or theres the chatter which means "DO WANT". Theres also the purr, the sleepy purr, the squeal, the growl, the hiss, the Intrigued meow, the noncomittal meow, the agressive purr, the inquisitive chirp, etc. They actually almost have a spoken language.

Yeah, I know! I can understand it, but I'll be damned if I can speak it.

I can. I don't have to use my tongue to make a purring or a rapid noise. I can do it in the back of my throat for some reason. Real helpful cause a lot of things a cat says have that rolling sound to it.

Its funny too cause people I know think i'm wierd. they'll see my cat and hear it just say "meow" a bunch of times, but i'll know shes saying something like "Hey dad follow me theres something cool in here!" or "Hey pick me up dammit!".
