We bought a "new" car today.  Actually a 2007 Toyota Corolla that was used in a rental agency, 30,000.  My wee beastie was a 1998 Ford Escort SE with 191,000 miles on it and it was starting to feel it too.  Plus we got an upgrade in gas mileage Escort was 19/25 (town/highway mileage)  The Corolla gets 30/35.

 8)

What color is it?

Grey, so I'm, going to name this car "Gandalf" as in "Gandalf the Grey".  Yes, I have a habit of namiing my transportation modes after LOTR characters.    :green:

What was the old car's name?

Galadriel

I have a bifid uvula.

 :o

Does it cause you to have any problems?

Today, the uvula is one of many body parts that people pierce. However, uvula piercings are very dangerous compared to other forms of body piercing, as the risks involved include swelling, throat edema, choking, and uvular infection.

As far as I know, no. It's been this way all my life, so I have no idea what it's like to have a normal one.

I know someone who had recurring tonsillitis that was untreated for a long time when she was a child, so the doctor had to actually remove her uvula because it was so infected.

It made her more likely to have things go down the wrong way when she ate or drank something.

nope, it's been done before.

Have you figured out how to stop them from doing it?

They are driving me crazy.

Uhm, I was posting in jest regarding the topic title, not responding to a specific post.

... or did you already know that and the "useless facts" are driving you CRAZY!?! I don't think they can be stopped.

Here's something I just read and thought was interesting.

I have been considering re shingling my roof, and was wondering about different colors and how they would affect the temperatures inside the home... this isn't the same thing, but is related and interesting.  Apparently all those dark colored roofs actually create hot spots in the local environment called heat islands:

Quote
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, for millions of Americans living in and around cities, heat islands are of growing concern. The "heat island effect" describes urban and suburban temperatures that are 2 to 10 degrees F (1 to 6 degrees C) hotter than nearby rural areas. Higher temperatures can impact communities by increasing peak energy demand and air conditioning costs. Several cities throughout the United States are looking into ways to combat the phenomenon. A cool roof can have a positive impact on its surroundings. It not only eases energy consumption at peak demand times, but a cool roof can also reduce the impact on the surrounding outside air temperature, potentially lessening the heat island effect.

We had our roof re-shingled in the lightest gray that was available in the type of asphalt shingle we needed.  The only lighter color would have been white.

If your roof does not have enough venting, it would be good to add some vents.

Oh.  I thought that you were answering this:

I have learned a great deal of pool chemistry in the past couple of weeks, as it applies to the extremely "hard" Indiana water.

Just wait until the birds start cleaning their babies' droppings out of their nests into your pool.

EWWW! That would be a problem.
Increased N would mean rapid algae growth, which leads to excessive O2, which means rapid depletion of Cl, disrupting the entire balance.

Aside from that ... YuK!

I know, Japanese eat bird nests, but I'm not Turning Japanese,  anytime soon, are you?

OBTW, I micro-manage the local chirper's nesting placement early in the spring, with my own presence and by playing music. It's easy to do here, because the leaves come very late in the season and the "twitterpated" wingers need shelter for their nests. They see me working in the garden and place their nests near the periphery of the property.

The only N-heavy problem I have this year is the early invasion of beetles which seem doomed once they hit the water. I have a nice skimmer with this new pool, though.

They eat birds nests?  Wouldn't they be kind of twiggy and full of poo and feathers and things?

* omega wonders what the definition of a "useless fact" is. Which in itself might be a useless fact of course.

But I am pretty sure the fact that the color of the network cable that is attached to my printer is green, is a useless fact to the average reader.

I'm sorry, Peter. I thought of the song and wanted to use it as a slight nod toward humor, disregarding the particular differences in Squintenese cultures, due to my pervasive racism.

:D

It's actually the Chinese who eat swift nests, in a soup.

Mine is yellow. See, now it's useful, all of a sudden, since I'm now using it to talk to you. :P
