That is a good point.  I have a friend whose young son is on SSI, so he got a little money every month plus Medicaid to pay for his many doctors and therapists and extensive medication for his epilepsy.  Then her husband died.  Her husband had a $50000 life insurance policy, so her son was kicked off SSI and Medicaid until she spent the money down and she had to account to them how every dollar was spent.
