creative writing.  it's a relatively new discipline in which one can gain a PhD, which makes for difficulties, cos there isn't an established "this is what one is/how it's done" rhetoric.  it's a real mind fuck, at times.  ::)

i like it, on the whole.  i really like his writing.  i do remember wanting to kill the protagonist in"the unbearable lightness of being", though - misogynist bastard.    :grrr:

i want to read his essays on writing - have you ever read them?

He's got a collection of essays on writing called The Curtain.  I started reading it about a month ago, and wound up putting it down again.  I'm finding it hard to stick with anything lately.  Was shocked that even Kundera couldn't keep me focused, but I just lost interest.  :-\ I think my favorite of his is Immortality, but I love them all.

I loved the character of Tereza in Unbearable Lightness - she saw herself as weak, but I thought she had so much guts.  I loved Juliette Binoche in the film version; she was perfect for the role.  As for Tomas, I saw parallels between him and Sabina; they seemed to be the male and female version of the same type of person...just playing it out in slightly different ways.  I should read that book again.

Kundera supposedly hated the film, and resolved to never again write a novel that could ever be worked into a screenplay.  I loved it, but maybe I'm strange.  I remember loaning it to a female friend, and she was completely shocked that a woman could like the film.  I seem to be good at shocking people sometimes.  :-\

Something just occurred to me!  I know you hated Tomas, but I just thought of a romantic line of his that you're now free to use yourself...
