it's a little of the first thing you suggested.  however, the PhD consists of a piece of original creative writing - novel, playscript, poetry: the first, in my case - and a contextualising thesis, which involves original and rigorous research, much as any other thesis.  what they'll do is grill me on both my academic research and my creative choices.
