Call me weird if you must, but seing karma numbers that are engine dispacements, makes me think about the bore and stroke combinations that produce those sizes.
In the late 60's , both Ford and Chevy made 302 V-8's that were made for Trans-Am racing.
Ford took their 289 with a 4" piston and 2.875 "stroke crankshaft, and increased the stroke to 3"
Chevy made 2 5.0L V-8's in the 60's by combining the 283 and the 327. The 283 had a 3.875" piston with a 3" stroke and the 327 had a 4" piston with a 3.25" stroke. Chevy made their 302 Trans-Am engine (using the fender tag code, Z-28 yes, that's where the term comes from) By taking the 327 block with it's 4" bore and intalling the shorter 3" stroke crank from the 283. The low-performance 5.0L, the 307, was made by taking the 283 block with it's 3.875 bore, and installing the longer 3.25" stroke crank from the 327.
In the late 70's Chevy decided to homoginize engine production, so they came up with the 305. The 305 was designed to use the same crankshaft as the 350 (3.48 stroke) so the engine was given a 3.736 bore.
