Hey! Very cool what you guys know about V8's!

I like V8's! :-)
I love the powerful galloping sound of all V engines.
But most of all I like the sound of V8s most.
V10s, 12s, 14s or 16s don't match V8s in sound. They become whiners and screamers (like Ferraris). Those are more a pain in the ears than an impressive sound. :-)

I'm very amazed at what you, Scraphole know about V8s.  :thumbup:
I guess you work as a mechanic or put together your own engines?

I know just the classic numbers, such as the big blocks Hemi 426 (Dodge Challenger and Charger), the Chevy 454, the Ford 442 and of course the regular small block 350.

Calculating in inches always was a bit too challenging for me, being from Switzerland where we measure in centimeters.  :vulcan: Also I never got the chance to put together my own V8, so I never had to learn.

I'm a CNC Machinist for a Top Fuel Funny Car Team. I whittle out 496 C.I. Engine blocks (based on the 426 hemi) from raw billet.

I could quite litteraly make you an engine from scratch.

It's quite easy actually. Bore²x .7854 x stroke x # of cylinders. Most of the Inch measurements are fractional. The common piston sizes are 3.875, 4.0, 4.125, 4.187, 4.25, 4.32 4.38 etc... an the common crank strokes are 2.875, 3.0 3.25, 3.48, 3.5, 3.625, 3.75, 3.875 and 4.0.

If I remember correctly, the Ford 427 came about due to a calibration error during the machining of a production run of 429 engine blocks.

Incidentally, I've also never heard of a V-14 either, though I know of some rather strange configurations that were used during WW2 in aviation, and also armor.

The German Jumo engines that powered the Stuka dive bombers and various fighter planes was an imposed 2 cycle diesel not unlike those used to power large ships.

Also, a lot of allied fighter aircraft were powered by inverted V engines.

Maybe so. I was just thinking of production in North America (most "American" cars are made in Canada or Mexico these days).

Most of the "American" car makers have switched to smaller V-8's for the same role, usually ~4.5L or so, or slightly larger (5.3-5.5) when they need more torque.
