I hope the men were putting down specific contracts, 1. in case the women meet up to their end but the guys decide to kick them out arbitrarily and 2. because I'd fear it might turn into slavery.  Of course marriages carry both these risks as well, though I thinkn to a lesser dgeree.

there are many laws protecting a person from getting kicked out onto the street.  it is very difficult to do so.

so what i was thinking is that the women can simply say sure, move in, then do nothing at all.
kinda like they were married.....

It depends on the state, but most states do not recognize common law marriage.  Massachusetts and California do not, for example.  Alabama and Colorado do.
