you're right about it being unproved, of course, but then it seems to work, so perhaps it's that we don't know the right questions to ask, or the right method of testing, yet.  or it might all be bollocks, (the placebo effect), as you say.  however, no-one's "proved" the theory of evolution yet, either, which is why it's still a theory.
