There is already a good foundation for this type of research:

• They already use electrical stimulation for muscle pain, commonly back pain.
• They've used electrical shock therapy to treat depression in some extreme cases.
• Neuroscientists can stimulate different parts of the brain and map (with some accuracy) pleasure/ecstasy centers.
• Research into hearing implants, and interfacing technology with brain functions is already becoming more commonplace (hearing implants, etc).

As the result of a 2011 ruling by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, Governor Deval Patrick’s administration imposed rules that only residents whose treatment plans were approved before that time and included the use of the GED, were still permitted to use it. Students and residents entering JRC since 2011 may not have the GED included in their treatment plan.
