One could take your response either way.
Basically I think females generally expect more ongoing maintenance in regard to any relationships....that is a general statement, I realise, however, obviously I don't necessarily put the 'correct' effort into relationships and most females are more sensitive to that and need ongoing maintenance to feel a friendship. Guys don't care so much if you float away and then come back.
That's why I said most of my female friends are less of the touchy feely type and more independant, so my floating back and forth is not so much of an issue.
IRL I am actually quite a caring and supportive friend to a point, however, there is only so much whining about the world I can bear. I have lost friends over that, but on the flipside, because I tend not to rely on others to bare my soul to, perhaps they don't feel close to me either...
