Probably the same as in Europe, 100 MB/s (hope I haven't misunderstood anything now).

I don't know of any ISP's offering 100MB/s.  100Mb/s (which is 12.5MB/s)  is, however, the most common speed these days for ethernet, which is what your home network will use unless you have wireless, and what the networks in schools, universities and large companies use (though they might also have a 1000Mb/s backbone).

Contrast that with the figures BT's own speedtest gives.  Bunch of fucking liars.

Sure you won't give Virgin a try Pete?

I might go with Zen internet or bethere; they score pretty highly.

Now my connection's faster than yours.  Seems bizarre that it would go from 0.1Mb/s to 4Mb/s.   :-\

I'm only managing about 25KB/s for bittorrent though.  I've switched from BitLord to Azureus, since Azureus supports encryption, which I've enabled, but it's not done anything to improve my download speed, and my upload speed is higher than my download speed; about 40KB/s.  Any idea why that would be?

I doubt it.  I hit a ceiling where adding more active downloads doesn't do anything to increase my download speed.  Right now my download is running about as fast as it ever gets, and the graph of my download activity looks like this:

  • I don't get people. What's their appeal precisely?
