Jeez. Just tried to pull up the left pant of my trousers (whilst sitting in my typical pose) and tjah.. tore the fabric apart. Bugger, there's now a hole in the trousers I always quite liked wearing.

What kind of fabric are the trousers made of and was the tear near a seam?

If it was not near a seam, there are iron on patches made of twill fabric available here, which you can iron on the wrong side of the fabric to reinforce the hole and you could take a few tiny stitches through the fabric and the patch to further reinforce the torn spot.

^ Ah, that's a kind and informative reply. Well, the fabric is cotton and the tear is just above the knee. It's horizontally and not really near to the both seams. Probably next time I put them on my left foot will make the hole even bigger still.

If you sew, you could also cut off the lower legs and make the trousers into short pants.  I have done that for quite a few pairs of pants or leggings where my daughter has destroyed the knees beyond repair.

^ Yes, I could cut the lower legs off but tbh, I'm not really a short pants wearing kinda chap. Think I'll turn the thing into a 'working' pants.. wearing them whilst painting or on other 'round the house (little) jobs. Well, maybe repair them a little to protect the trousers to tear even further.

Vlieseline will do the trick Callaway is describing as a repair trick. There are more expensive solutions, but they all work the same way.
Vlieseline isn't the strongest solution, but, it will hold the fabric together while you are sewing. Does make it more easy.

It the trousers are really old, a new horizontal tear is bound to happen though. So, promote them to kinky work-pants may be the best option indeed.
