Its to stop you defaulting on your contract easily, after all they have your credit card. A checking account you can just close, and effectively stop paying them.

Do you ever stop talking about things of which you have no knowledge? It is even easier to stop charges to a credit card than it is to stop charges to a banking account. I have done both many times. A credit card number ensures a merchant nothing as a means of securing some non-existent contract.

I can't figure out why some places accept credit cards (and nothing else),
others accept e-checks (but NOT credit cards). And debit cards are in
some special zone, which seems the most restricted.

I figure, if they want my money, they'll make it easy to pay them.

I had to go to the bank to stop a direct debit and had to fill out and sign some forms. It was to do with a charity organisation and even though I sent them an email and rung them, they still wouldn't stop debiting my account.

The bank "froze" the debiting. I will never sign up with a charity organisation again. I hate the ones in the shops where their people approach you to sign up to them. It is like they are trying to make you feel guilt for having enough money for shopping or something. Arseholes.
