Stupid benefits system.  If they let me do what I wanted with my money, I could save and invest it and possibly not need to be on benefits forever, but instead they'll stop my benefits if I have more than £2000, and only start them again once I've spent some of it.

I absolutely, positively deny ever having or having any intention to engage in the second option.  As for precious metals, only gold is vat-exempt in the UK, and taking personal possession of gold bullion removes it from the Good Delivery system, which immediately takes a big chunk off it's value.  There are businesses now that rent space in Good Delivery vaults to store gold and allow small investors access to the Good Delivery system, but then it's harder to hide the investment.  Also, gold is a pretty poor investment; it's really more of a hedge against poor market conditions.

Any silver purchases here get hit with 17.5% VAT, which pretty much writes it off as an investment.  I already kind of have an off-the-books job in that I get a porn check for about $30 once a month.  Not enough to affect my benefits, even if anybody noticed it, but I hope that income will increase, though off-the-books or not, you're pretty much stuck for what to do with the money, since most investments would be traceable.
