Now the real bitch:

I BROKE MY LITTLE DANISH PIPE THIS AFTERNOON! I stuck it in my pocket, while I was in the garden, and I broke the stem off when I bent down.

Yes, a very elegant little Jarl brand tobacco smoking pipe, that I've had for twenty years. It would be expensive to replace, over one hundred dollars, and impossible to condition to the same degree of mellowness as my broken one, except over a long period of time. I'm going to fix it! I have found some repair parts and I can do the hand-fitting work myself, but it's still a bummer.

... but I wouldn't want to put any of that near my mouth.

Think Heli-Coil, except for use with hard rubber.

I once tried to repair an exhaust manifold with JB Weld, but it didn't work.  I had to replace it.

JB Weld wouldn not take the heat nor the dramatic expansion and contraction.
Believe it or not, I have had success, more than once, rebuilding broken cork tenons on clarinets.
One was the lower tenon on a bass clarinet, which belonged to a school, and the entire tenon was gone. I had to mold one out of layers of JB Weld, then turn it down to the proper size, both inside and out, and it worked fine. It took about three days, but it was a fairly rare instrument, useless without a way to connect together, easily, and tune with the rest of the orchestra. I fixed it.

That's cool that you were able to do that.  After I tried the JB Weld, I tried getting the exhaust manifold braised, then I tried getting it welded because all the used ones I found in a junkyard had exactly the same cracks that my original one had and my Buick had less than 60,000 miles on it.  When none of those fixes worked, I bought a new one from the dealer, then I wrote a letter to the CEO of General Motors, explaining this fact to them.  A friend helped me rewrite the letter and General Motors wound up reimbursing me for the cost of the new exhaust manifold.

The only way to repair cast iron is to TIG weld it using Nickel filler rod. You also have to heat up the manifold first, weld it, and SLOWLY let it cool. It's an art that only a few have mastered. I doubt the people you dealt with new what they were doing.  :-\
