Gerald Ford did not get a lot of media attention, but he was actually a very decent human being, IMO.
He was perceived as clumsy because he tripped on a step and was filmed doing it, then Chevy Chase lampooned him on Saturday Night Live as being extremely clumsy. Actually, he was captain of the football team in high school and he played football in college as well. He was a gifted athlete.
He was criticized for granting a Presidential Pardon to Richard Nixon for his involvement in the Watergate cover-up after he resigned and that is probably a big part of the reason that Jimmy Carter won the next election. Another part is that Gerald Ford was appointed to be the Vice President after Spiro Agnew resigned because of a tax evasion and bribery scandal, and when that was compounded by the Watergate scandal, I think voters just wanted a change for their next president, someone who was above even the appearance of evil. Also, the economy was a great concern duing Ford's administration and those stupid Whip Inflation Now (WIN) pins did not do a lot to actually stop inflation.
He did do a couple of really good things while he was president, IMO. He signed a law in 1975
guaranteeing full educational rights and opportunities for "Handicapped Children", and he was a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment.
