The Novel "Atonement" , which I read a while ago, had some intresting thoughts on the word cunt.  The first the letters all remind him of cunts - sideways, upsidedown, and upright.  And the word as a whole visually looks like "three huddled figures at the foot of a cross".

As I said, I don't find the word to be unspeakably offensive but it's still a high-level, scrubber-in-face-warranting word.  And, as PM implied, if someone deserves that name, expect to have something thrown at you for being called it; if the person doesn't deserve it, don't call them it.

And McJ- yes, they're similar, but according to m-w a sycophant is more likely ass-kissing in their own self-interest, someone who is obsequious could be ass-kissing for their own purposes or just because they're that way naturally.
