The authorities first approved the AstraZeneca vaccine for 65 and younger, citing insufficient data. Then there was the blood clotting scare that they blamed the vaccine for, so it was paused while they were investigating. And now they've decided to *only* use it for people 65 and older because the 30 or so cases around the globe happened in people younger than that.

30 cases out of 17 million jabs and no clear causality. It's a hell of a lot better than 13,500 dead out of 10 million people. WTF is wrong with them?

It's politics.  People have misplayed their hands and they're looking for scape goats.

And just this morning, EU's stopped exports of the Astra vaccine until the company delivers what they promised.

Soem of the supplies they are stopping were manufactured outside the EU but sent for processing/repackaging i the EU for non-EU countries.  The EU is not making friends here.

Is everyone else doing their twice weekly quick home tests?

I'm going through a couple of boxes a week.  Any of the family come round to see us I stick swabs up their noses.

Nope. I've done a grand total of one (1) covid tests. This was in December when I had difficulty breathing properly for weeks and thought I might actually have it. I didn't, according to the test. The doctor I went to see a few days later said I'd probably had pneumonia (but no longer did) and the tests are sometimes wrong.

No idea what he actually thought.

Back on topic. Trackers can be frustrating to discuss when not accompanied by any level of analysis, along with reporting delays and public discussion of inaccurate and/or insufficient testing, and/or reporting. Enough time has passed to allow a different approach to viewing mortality via excess mortality. For those who might find it of interest, https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/excess-mortality-p-scores?year=earliest&time=2020-01-05..2020-08-16 The link is very user friendly, allowing to add and remove countries within the data set, setting date ranges, while accommodating for chart, map, and table views.
Checking back on this link. While the US third wave peaked higher than the first wave, since the vaccines have been implemented excess death rates are now down to 4%.

I'm still doing 2 or 3 lateral flow tests a week.  Got a sore throat and a headache today but I'm negative for 'rona.

Any side effects after the second shot?

Starting the next morning chills, dull headache,  soreness and tiredness.  It was rather miserable it began clearing up the second day and was gone on the third.  I generally have bad reactions to vaccines though and this was similar to the reaction I get every time I get a tetanus shot

Sounds like something to look forward to. :P

After the first, I had a headache for a day or so, and the arm was sore enough to produce a sleepless night.
