OK, a new riddle (sorry if I posted this one already):

A man bought a horse for $60 and sold it for $70. Then he bought it back for $80 and sold it for $90. How much money did he make or lose?

a) Lost $10
b) Broke even
c) Gained $10
d) Gained $20
e) Gained $30

There's several ways of loking at this, but I'm saying he broke even.

The original price is 60 he sells and makes $10

He buys a $60 horse for $80 and looses $20 (-$10)

He sells for $90 and makes his $10 back.

I think that he made $20.

He spent $140 total ($60 + $80) buying the horse and he earned $160 total ($70 + $90) selling it.

i think he gained $20.

but,

i will guess that he gained $10.

see he made a $10 profit on the first sale, but then he lost $10 when he bought it back so he was at the break even point.
but then he sold it for $10 more, so his profit was $10.
Misunderstood.

Why is this a riddle? ???

i'm gonna say he gained $30 because he originally bought it for $60 and the rest cancels each other out with the whole $10 thing.

It all in honesty should have costed more in the end but She said it was true. :o ::)

Here is the answer:  He gained $20.  And none of you would have been fooled (I hope) if I'd said something like:

"A man bought a brown horse for $60 and sold it for $70. Then he bought a pinto horse for $80 and sold it for $90. How much money did he make or lose?"

In that case it's obvious he's made $10 profit each on two seperate exchanges, totally a $20 profit.

I thought of it from a business perspective. I gave him a budget and after his four exchanges he had increased his purse by twenty dollars. No complicated figuring necessary. Maybe you could work out a more misleading, sleight-of-mouth type question at some point.

OK, here's another one:

3 men split a pizza at an expensive Italian restaurant. Each man paid $10. The waiter took the money but was a bit pissed that he got no tip. However, when he delivered it to the manager the manager said that the pizza should only have been $25, and gave him five one-dollar bills to return to the customers. Since the waiter could not divide five dollar bills evenly by three, he decided to keep $2 as a tip and give each man $1 back.

Now, here's the tricky part: Each man actually paid $9 for the pizza. There were three men, 3x9=27, so the pizza really cost $27. The waiter kept $2. 27+2=29. So if there was $29 involved, where did the extra dollar go?

Ahem. The $'1' is the downstroke in the '+' in the sum '27+2' - which should have been 27-2 of course. :P

I've done this one already...... all you did is subtract $2 twice.  ;) ;D
