* You get everything with fries. A lot of fries. Even a club sandwich. I wouldn't be surprised if you got noodles with fries but I haven't tried since I don't like noodles.

You can ask for coleslaw.

Quote
* People seem a bit shorter than here. Not by much, but I do think I am right.

I noticed in northern Germany that they are taller than average Americans

Quote
* Shop clerks will invariably greet you with "hello sir, how are you?" which will eventually drive you mad.
* Those same clerks will be extremely helpful whenever it's in their power to be helpful, but they will never ever take any initiatives that require them to cross boundaries to other people's job descriptions, especially someone higher up in the hierarchy.
* And the hierarchies are everywhere.

How is Europe different? Do employees tell their bosses to fuck off??

Quote
* Very few cities that I have visited have that same sense about concentrated power that Washington DC has.

Go figure.

Quote
* People drive surprisingly big cars, with long wheelbases and huge V8 or V12 engines. The cars are frequently quite new but also ill kept.

V-8's mostly, V-12's are rare in the US though you do see V-10's in trucks.

Quote
* The Americans really are a patriotic lot. It's not just the flags, it's the whole lifestyle. And yet, the patriotism is not about the leaders or the parties or anything like that, it's about the country and its principles, which means that at the airport, you will be able to buy a t-shirt stating that yes, you do love your country but it is the government you are afraid of. 'merica fuck yeah.

What's left to be patriotic about I'm not sure. Mexicans are overrunning the country and the government is corrupt beyond repair. Manufacturing is all but gone and each new generation is progressively dumber. There's nothing American left to be patriotic about.

Not necessarily, but if your boss is not present, you will make your own decisions, even if it means going outside your job description.

I take it you're talking about "big box" stores like Satan's Five and Dime Wal-Mart. Yeah, they are highly authoritarian, pay their employees next to nothing and treat them like dirt. Most large companies have followed their lead. That's why if you want good customer service in the US, you have to go to a "mom and pop" store.

Yes, pretty much every bigger chain I visited, but also the hotel where I was staying (Marriott's). Hierarchies are respected a lot more in the US than here.

But don't get me wrong; I did get good customer service at the majority of the stores I visited. It is one of your country's better qualities that so many people are actually nice, polite and helpful. They tend to be far more open than my countrymen.

I know what you mean. I went to a gas station store with a question about the air pump, but the clerk was entirely unhelpful because the pump belonged to the garage which was closed. Finally, I asked if he had the number to the garage (two feet away, attached to the store, mind you), and he said he didn't know, to look it up in a phone book.

I walked outside and the number was on the garage door. HOW he did not have that on him, or at least know it was there, I have no idea. What if there was a fire or a crime or something...they OUGHT to be able to contact each other somehow...

 :facepalm2:

Yes everything is increasingly specialised and bureaucratic. Just try and do some official business on the telephone.  :headhurts:
