Oregon police taser 11-year-old autistic girl found wandering naked

I'm pretty sure that if you saw an 11 year old naked, you would be able to tell if she was a mature woman or a girl.

Just saying...even if she was sprouting breasts - and furthermore, her father says she was functioning at a much younger level. Clearly not a threat- the taser is LAST resort, but cops are content to use it as first resort, or even just to have fun.

First resort would be to walk up to her, say something, and escort her to the cop car.

But she wasn't wearing a sign or a tattoo that said I AM AUTISTIC AND CANNOT SPEAK.  I FUNCTION AT A 3 YEAR OLD LEVEL.  You don't expect to find a non-verbal 11 year old on the interstate at 4 in the morning.

I'm just thankful that nothing happened to her (hit by a car, picked up by a pervert) and that the powers that be aren't investigating the parents.

I saw it said in the report that she appeared in her teens or early twenties.

Even the hospital personnel thought she was a lot older than 11.

How much "disobedience" of a police officer's orders should an officer take before turning up the response level?

The 911 caller said she might be on some type of drug because of her behavior.  That would/should make the officer more wary about possible actions by the walker.   

Every police call can be second-guessed.  IMO, it was unfortunate, but it could have gone down a hell of a lot worse.

I think this could have been handled a lot better than it was, tasering her, even if he mistook her for an adult seems excessive.

...but as for the age mistake...I really can't say "he should have known". All the hormones in our food and water anymore aren't helping, puberty used to begin around 12, now they consider 9 or 8 even in the "normal" range.

Son has a friend that looks every inch of 16 or older, (she's a size D)... and way taller than I am (which isn't too difficult I guess )...she'll be 12 in a few weeks.

Precocious Puberty (in that case)...has some girls starting as young as 5 or 6.
Not saying this is the case here, just saying mistaking her for being older...I would say "possible".

About the age, IQ and VQ are right, 11 year olds can look very mature. Size D for 12 year olds isn't a big exception any more.

Don't understand the tasering though. Why not wait with using the taser till there is actual threat of physical abuse by the person approached by the police. Why start with the assumption the girl is up to no good, when they could have started with the assumption the girl could be in need of help. Drugged naked woman could easily be a rape case too.
