A LOT of them are fake, they can put on a big smile for their spouse or someone they know and then proceed to treat the cashier, stock boy, or the kid returning the carts like a lower life form. These are the same ones that run into a friend while shopping that they hug and maybe offer condolences to for something, inviting them over to visit maybe...5 minutes later you can find them talking nasty about the same person two aisles over. 

It's a great way to see if people are OK to have around or not though. Those that try to get your attention by talking nasty about people, they will do the same about you. Red flag. Stay away from them.
Just like there are people who are genuine and fair in their valuation of people. Those people can be a treasure to have amongst your friends.

I watch and listen to them when I sell at the flea market and like it has been said a lot of them seem so fake.  I have noticed though that a lot of people don't pick up on the fakeness.  I have hard time with the whole faking it part and hate it when people act that way with me and think that may be part of my problem interacting with some people.

Don't really people watch, unless maybe stuck waiting alone among a crowd. Usually off in my own head and don't notice others that much. Am careful to be consciously attentive in places like work, to not be rude and miss acknowledging the presence of others. For example, passing in the parking lot, or entering the break room; the nod, smile, or small wave is important to others.

When I am in public places I watch people.

It is amazing to me how seamless they interact with each other.  To me, they look fake.and needy.

Yet, observing for an elongated time (school gate, for example) you see how the seamless interacting also makes them very efficient, once something community based needs to be done. Organising seems to go automatically, and nearly flawless.

When standing at school gates you can observe a similar thing to what is happening on the school playground. There are groups of popular and less popular people. And, there are the misfits, standing outside the groups, but, now and then interacting with each other, in a totally different way than the groups.

Very funny when a tall symmetrical person of the opposite sex arrives, btw. Very funny.

Watching people is a good pass time.

  It's funny, occasionally I will  "click"  with a stranger and have a really good conversation, but most of
   the time I resist strangers who try to talk on and on.  I get indignant at the intrusion, I have almost
   an old-fashioned objection to them because we have not been properly introduced!
