I want to live forever.
« on: December 07, 2012, 05:22:52 PM »
People are very quick to reject this idea, always jumping right for the "b-b-but watch your friends and family die?"
I could watch friends and family wither away. I would miss them for a while, sure, who wouldn't, but then I would continue to live. After a century or two, I would probably not even remember them.
Tens of thousands of years would pass, I would watch humanity progress, regress, progress and regress, like ocean waves. I could make bets with the stars, how long could humanity last? A hundred thousand years? One million? More than a million?

Eventually I would be the only living thing left on the planet, left to myself and my own thoughts, no more language, no more theory, no more merit to any kind of knowledge.

I would persist.

The world would be consumed by the sun, eventually the sun would explode.

I would drift like a autumn leaf through empty space, still alive, still concious, but devoid of thought and feeling.

I would aimlessly tumble around, enter and escape galaxies. Quasars would swallow me and spit me out. This universe would contract, and re-expand into a new existence, and I would persist and persist.
Forever.
Awesome!

Stories of vampires and also elves were an inspiration to the "no age hormone" that is a semi-central theme in my novels, and grants a handful of my characters theoretically eternal life (altho their bodies are not indestructible, and they need nutrition, air, surviveable conditions etc, to live, but if kept safe, will live forever)

I'll settle for the more or less indefinite lifespan offered by mind uploading.  I'd seriously like to get my head frozen, since uploading won't become a reality in my natural lifetime, and it's my only real chance at persisting beyond the next 70 or so years.  If it became a legally viable option, I could see myself opting to end things at 75 and get frozen in a controlled setting, rather than risking dying with no cryogenics team nearby to work on me before my brain has degraded past the point of being worth preserving, and to avoid the accelerating natural deterioration to my brain that would set in past that age.

That isn't really eternal tho, instead "a very long time".
Cryogenics cannot last "forever" simply because those who maintain it are finite, and will disappear. I'm talking about outliving the universe itself, following existence itself, onto eternity!
What you speak about is however the closest down to reality that my dream gets, SO... it'd be something I'd have to "settle" for :D

I can confirm that we are forever, Zegh. We exist after death as shadows of what we were. Sort of like our imprint or information. Already been there.

I can only imagine such a fate, as a form of hell.

I imagine it goes for a lot of aspies/auties, not just me, but I have to continuously seek new knowledge. Being unable to, for all eternity; and not only that, but in your scenario, the knowledge gained assuming there was anything left to learn, there would be no way to implement or otherwise make use of any of it.

I imagine the result, would be insanity. And there wouldn't be a living thing left to hear you scream.

And as for being sucked into, and spat out of, a quasar...I don't think that would be possible, even for an immortal, un-killable being. The gravity field of such a massive object, or of the black hole that powers a quasar would keep you there, trapped.

Assuming of course, that one wasn't instantaneously fried extra-crispy by the radiated X-rays, UV, IR output of the quasar, which in the case of some of the most powerful, according to wikipedia, can exceed 2 trillion times that of our sun.

The core of a quasar, apparently, are supermassive black holes.

So coming towards one, one would be stretched into a very long, very thin streak of meat paste.

How do you fancy spending the rest of eternity as a noodle?:autism:

I'd be up for cryonics myself, definitely, having one's consciousness implanted into a robotic body, or a cloned, meat-based body would be pretty sweet. Hypothetically, perhaps one's consciousness could be repeatedly implanted into 'blank' clones, to be replaced as they wear out.
Beyond the pale. Way, way beyond the pale.

You are wrong about no living things. We are talking eternity here, this means you are bound to be cought by some or other form of intelligent life, sooner or later, it could be a billion years, it could be a billion billion years, or it could be a billion billion entire universe-lifetimes one after the other, but in the end - ONLY a matter of time.
And every intelligent life form to catch you, would see you as extraordinary. They would research you and try to understand you, but you would have nothing to fear, being immortal and indestructible.

Over time, even these encounters would mount up, there would be 10, then 100, then 1000, then 10 000, eventually you would simply pick and choose which ones to interact with. You could dissapoint an entire civilization by never saying a word, or encourage and inspire another, by being a shining beacon of extraterrestrial wisdom

Obviously, you'd have to be able to supernaturally regenerate any lost limb or body part and not feel pain. Or else it would suck big time to suffer for eternity.

Of course, I am clinging to all sorts of fiction here. The cold of outer space is likely to crack a body apart like a cola-can left in the freezer for too long. It's the idea of eternal indestructibility, except for the mental state, which would come and go according to mental stimuli. As long as the brain isn't physically degraded, one should be able to re-train it, over time.
