Submarine Dilemma
« on: November 18, 2006, 09:41:19 AM »
Submarine Dilemma:  You are the captain of a submarine and a compartment is leaking where there are 50 sailors inside.  You can close the compartment door immediately, trapping and killing all 50 sailors, OR you can take a 10% chance that you will kill all 1000 people on the submarine by leaving the door open for long enough for the 50 sailors to get out.  What do you do?

I'd close the door...  the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few and all that

I would allow time for half of them to escape, as the chance of fucking the lot would be halved (5%, for 1000 crew = 50 lives cost = risk-reward equal). that way we end up with best likely outcome. I'm aware the act of allowing each crew member to escape would shift the risk-return curve, but I don't have time or inclination to plot the exact best number, so I'll go with saving 25 of them before pulling the plug. (yeah, I've done some ops research but its rusty. lol)

I honestly don't know what I would do if faced with situation for real, a 10% risk of killing everyone seems pretty low though and I think it would be pretty hard to shut the door on those 50 sailors.

What would you do Callaway?

I'm never going to go into a fucking submarine.  They freak me out.

Climb in and shut the door.
And as always, these are simply my worthless opinions.

Climb in and shut the door.

So you'd justify sacrificing the 50 sailors because you sacrificed yourself too?

Basically yes.  If I am going to kill 50 of my loyal friends and ship mates, i think it would only be fair to them if they knew I was sharing their sacrifice.

Fuck that.  If we're going for suicide, is this a military submarine with guns somewhere so I can go in and shoot them so they'll die more peacefully, then shoot myself because after killing 50 people I think I'd be pretty much ready to off myself?

Wouldn't you want to take the 90% chance you could save them all?
