Dwarf Fortress
« on: March 20, 2012, 12:34:14 PM »
Is anyone else into it?
It's a great game for when you just want to relax and immerse yourself in imagination land. I usually only play Adventurer Mode, but I know the ins and outs of Fortress Mode pretty well.  :viking:

I've yet to fire up Fortress Mode on the new version, but I've heard the mosquito man problem mentioned  ;)
I imagine there will be bugs and imbalances galore in the coming months.

Whats Dwarf Fortress?

A free ASCII graphic game that takes more processing power than most modern games, with the most brutally realistic combat system ever devised. It`s still in alpha and will be for probably 10 more years.

Basically the ultimate game ever.

Whats Dwarf Fortress?

It's a brutally hard, incredibly detailed roguelike.

It has two modes - Adventurer, which is what is says on the tin, and Fortress, which is what most people play it for.

You start off with seven alcoholic dwarves and a wagon of supplies. Maybe some animals, if you chose them. Your objective is to not die - which you eventually, inevitably, will. Strike the Earth, and remember, Losing is FUN.

It also requires a hideous amount of processing power. Keeping in mind it calculates humidity, air pressure, air flow, water pressure and flow, temperature, if there are pathogens in the air etc on every single space on the map, up and down (100+ up, and I've had a map with 270+ zlevels going down), as well as tracking each living creature down to blood vessels and nerves...

And it looks like this.

Or like this, if you use a tileset.

Do people play this for fun?
I2 today is not i2 of yesteryear. It is a knitting circle. Those that participate be they nice or asshats know their place and the price to be there. Odeon is the overlord

.Benevolent if you toe the line.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

Censoring/banning/restricting/moderating myself, Calanadale & Scrapheap were all not his finest moments.

How to apologise to Scrap

Yeah. It's fun, but as I said - hard. Tilesets make it easier.

New version added the ability to be infected with Vampirism and Lycanthropy - I've seen a Weremarmot.

Oh, also, you've got the Forgotten Beasts, that show up in the subterranean caverns. They are completely randomly generated - the game looks at the list of possible materials, limbs, joint, skin, skeleton etc etc types (which you can easily modify) and throws together a beast. So, you can have an 8 legged giant marmot with rock skin and venomous breath - and the effect of the venom will also be randomized and sometimes quite horrific. Losing is Fun!

Oh, and the Hidden Fun Stuff, which lives deep in the earth. You can probably work out what it is from that.

You have been spotted!
You block the flying copper arrow. You attack the Chieftain but the shot is blocked! The Chieftain stabs you in the upper right leg with his ☼Bronze Scimitar☼ fracturing the bone. A motor nerve has been severed!
You fall over.
You attack the Chieftain but the shot is blocked! The Chieftain stabs you in the lower body with his ☼Bronze Scimitar☼ tearing the guts.
You feel sick!
You retch.
You retch.
You vomit.
You retch.
You vomit.
You retch.
You retch.
The Chieftain slashes you in the left hand with his ☼Bronze Scimitar☼ and the severed part sails off in an arc! You lose hold of the Copper Shield. The flying copper arrow strikes you in the lower body tearing the pancreas. The arrow is lodged firmly in the wound. The Chieftain slashes you in the right lower arm with his ☼Bronze Scimitar☼ tearing the muscle. Many nerves have been severed! You lose hold of the Iron Spear. The flying copper arrow strikes you in the lower left leg chipping the bone. The arrow is lodged firmly in the wound.
You give into pain.
The Chieftain slashes you in the head with his ☼Bronze Scimitar☼ shattering the skull. A tendon in the skull has been torn! The Chieftain slashes you in the head with his ☼Bronze Scimitar☼ and the severed part sails off in an arc!
You have been struck down.
