I learnt it myself just yesterday (heard it on politics tv) and wanted a chance to use it, which I got.

I am thinking it is related to "vitriol".

Etymology

From Latin vituperatum, past participle of vituperare (“to blame, censure”), from vitium (“fault, defect”) + parare (“to furnish, provide, contrive”).

Vitriol is a word that means sulphuric acid. And, sulphuric acid got that name, because it is kinda glass-like in appearance.
The strong acidic, and very corrosive nature of vitriol made it a good word to use for very bitter people too.
