When I was in school 1963, they taught us etymology and you were tested to make sure you could recognize which words came from other languages and how the rules bent around adapted or adopted terms in English.
My kids were not even offered this advantage, since so much was taught about how bad everything American is and how we should change to make up for being so bad.
I had to step in ... "Hey, that word is from Latin." or "Did you know that's a French word anglicized to our use?" or "Watch out; that word is adapted from Greek!" or "Oh, SHIT, African word!"
Honestly both kids have become accomplished writers now and they wonder how I know so much when most of this is new to them. But, I'm a high school drop out. My education was never finished.
The answer is simple. Education has changed from pure instruction to brainwashing.
Continuing to learn after school is YOUR job!
