Ten or twenty minutes to establish a connection? If you were lucky you could achieve DL speeds in the KBs, but not for long.

The first time I encountered the net was the Usenet, back in 1985 or so. The uni was connected to Arpanet and there were a few Usenet groups available. We had a statistics course and the labs were done using Unix machines connected to the uni network.

I learned a few other skills as well, including Fortran programming and breaking into the Superuser account - which was NOT difficult.
