Fake phone calls...
« on: August 18, 2011, 04:46:39 PM »

People pretend they are busy to avoid boring friends

London: If you think that your friend often turns busy over phone on meeting you, it may be that he or she is opting for such a tactic simply to avoid you.

A study has found that many people when bored of talking to individuals around them, pretend talking to others by making fake phone calls.

In a survey it was found at least 13 percent of those who own a mobile phone resorted to this tactic rather than talking to someone nearby, Daily Mail reported.

That figure gets dialled up to 30 percent for people in 18 to 29-year-old age group and down to six percent for those aged between 50 and 64. In the 30 to 49 age group, 11 percent are regular fakers, it was found.

Smartphone owners, meanwhile, did their bit to bring the average up, with one in five of them admitting to conducting phoney calls.

Of those polled, 42 percent turn to mobile phones for entertainment. At least 40 percent declared their device was something they'd found useful in an emergency.

The survey was conducted by Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project which interviewed 2,277 Americans.

Yes i have done this before!  I have 'fake call'  in the menu and you can either just set it like an alarm
or press button and it will ring.

Can even fix a voice to talk to but never used that part.

It is also good if you are getting chatted up by someone with a face like a robbers dog!
and even if you just feel a bit self concious in a public place.

Does sound kind of Aspie-like to fake a phone call.

Phones are evil in general so anything that can get me off of one is great

They are spooky. I hear voices in mine. They sometimes speak in foreign tongues

I use my phone a lot,  but text rather than call.

I used to spend lots of time on phone at work
and grew to hate it!

That happened on my landline a few years ago, after an ice storm that took down a lot of power lines.
Most likely some wires got crossed as a result.  I used to pick up my phone and hear a woman speaking Spanish.  :twitch:

I had the same thing happen but she spoke English.  She was rather rude at first till we figured out just what was happening

Never done this. I have always been straight up honest by telling them I want to get back to what I was doing. It's not about being bored, I just don't want to be on the phone for a long time unless I had it planned.

I have heard of a person carrying on a fake conversation on their phone in front of people. And then their phone rings, interrupting their fake conversation.

I haven't done it myself. I don't like talking on the phone so am unlikely to fake a conversation on one.

Wouldn't work for me, everyone who knows me knows that my standard response to my phone ringing is:

"Fuck off*," *hit "end call" button*.

*To the phone itself; I don't answer it like that.
