Not as tired as I expected to feel. I have to drive an hour to pick up the boyfriend from work at midnight. Can't leave for another hour yet.

Bit down. Bit of family shit going on. Money is really tight and that is annoying me. I have stuff needing replacing and no money tp do things that make the monotony of life bearable. At the same time, I have a 3 day holiday back to WA, in a month, which will be interesting and HOPEFULLY an internationaL trip in September. It will, no doubt be worth it THEN. It is just NOW that is the problem. Maybe once I start booking things, I will be happier about things.

Currently feeling relieved. Checked in with client just now about meeting tomorrow and she forgot and is out of the country. Now I can enjoy my clean house tomorrow with no company.

Picked up my med refills today, and despite working all night long, with just a few book breaks (reading a steven king novel atm, 'from a buick 8') when there is nothing to actually be DONE, feel perfectly relaxed now, was shattered and exhausted from the all-nighter in the lab beavering away at extracting the finished compound from my latest project.

A wee taster of the purified (essential in this case to do so most carefully as the route involves the use of a divalent mercury species, and these are extremely toxic compounds, nasty as hell and give me the fucking creeps working with them. In this case, mercuric sulfate and mercuric chloride (the sulfate turned out to hydrolyze, I believe from Hg (II) sulfate to Hg (I) sulfate, and the monovalent ionic Hg salts are usually a fair bit less toxic, mercurous compounds are less noxious than mercuric, although still not nice, only problem is in this case the mercuric oxidation state (Hg (II) is esential for the reaction to proceed)

happy for three reasons:

My NaBH4 arrived.

Elated because Miss K is back

Because of no.1, no more mercury-aluminium or similar amalgam reductions. #i honestly cannot ever see my doing another amalgam reduction. They are an ugly, generally messy, require *extremely* poisonous divalent mercury salts such as Hg (II) nitrate, HgCl2 etc., and the lethal (acute) dose is a mere couple of hundred milligrams. Bad enough that my mercuric chloride lives in its sealed bottle, tightly capped, with the bottle inside a ziplock bag, inside a bigger ziplock, inside another bag pinned to the inside of the door of one of my reagent&equipment storage cabinets in order to give it the maximum amount of separation from everything else possible. I've a fair few pretty deadly reagents, but Hg (II) salts just make the hair on the back of my neck stand up and my skin crawl thinking about using them. And thats coming from someone who has a special separate fridge for reagents with a bottle of iodine monochloride he made himself and who's made and distilled chromyl chloride on a liter scale.

I guess I just felt the pressure and posted that. I have been trying to get myself out of this situation. I dunno, I feel quite private about it. Like I don't want to tempt fate or something, heh.
