Cost of auto repairs went from $700 to $1550
Another car might have been cheaper.
Bought the truck for 4 grand, have put about $3000 in repairs into it over the past three years. AC compressor, fuel pump, two alternators (at least I did those myself), two batteries, plugs and wires, intake manifold and a wheel cylinder. I would have just junked it for a cheap car but I need the truck to have any fun with my boat
Plus I am in the middle of pulling all the carpet out of my basement and still need it for trips to the dump.
What went wrong with it?
Price for labor even repairing stupid shit is nuts anymore.
Flashing check engine light and engine was shuddering with about half power. Bad misfire in cylinder #1, guy quotes $700 to replace all the plugs and wires plus change the oil, new air filter and replace a bulb. While he is pulling the plugs he finds that the spark plug tube for cylinder #5 is full of coolant. Tracks that down and finds a bad leak in the intake manifold. Plus I have a frozen brake in the back and the brake fluid is dangerously low. I approve some more work to fix that and then he comes back and says that he can't bleed the air out of the brake lines because some screw on a wheel cylinder is stuck and he needs to replace the cylinder. In the middle of all of this he also flushed the brake fluid and transmission fluid (that was slipping also). End of the day the total was $1505, but it runs nicely now and the trannie isn't slipping anymore. Which is good as I am taking a 7-day road trip with some buddies for a field study course in mid-August, and I am going to be driving these guys up and down mountains all day.
