Thinking how aging changes a singer's voice. Poor Art Garfunkel.
It's also amazing how some hold up. Ozzy can barely speak an intelligible word, but he can wail like he always could.

I watched a few snippets of the program where he and his son were touring historical places. I felt like the kid from the "Sixth Sense" movie, but instead of dead people ...
...    " I SEE ALZHEIMER'S "

Have not heard him sing lately, though. I will have to go find some.

OH and singing is way different from talking. Intelligibly or otherwise.
Mel Tillis, might be unknown to most, but I met him at The Grand Ole Opry one night and I was amazed at just how troubled he was in an unforeseeable situation. He had his handlers with him, but he still tried to identify with my father who was already known to him but they had only recently met. I almost cried for him. He just wanted to voice his appreciation for the things my father had done in the industry and he could not. My dad got it, though and he did cry.

They had him do stuff on television in the seventies and he stuttered a bit. In real life he stuttered so terribly that he was almost unintelligible. BUt give a rythym and a melody and it all went away and there was no stuttering, NONE what so ever.

Not sure how I got off on that track, but singing is different from talking.

Ghoti

A possible misspelling of  the word,  "fish."

There are so many of these popping up and some are actually funny.

To explain :

gh=f   from the sound used in cough, rough, tough, etc
o= i   as in the common mispronunciation of the word "women"
ti= sh   as in the words  action, infraction or all other -tion words

If this shows up as interesting, I can post a link if need be.

I knew this one, it was explained on Ripley's Believe it or not by Jack Palance's daughter Holly. There's even a Christian rock band called Ghoti Hook.

I heard Rod Stewart spontaneously singing a few songs during a TV interview recently. He sounds exactly the same as he ever did. He isn't ancient though, he is 73. That seems ancient when you're 25, sure, but not so much when you're my age.

Still, similar age to Art Garfunkel and Donovan.

Can't say I've got a huge amount of sympathy for them. They got to be rock stars (well pop stars anyway), made lots of money, and had a great talent that lasted them many years. Time catches up with all of us, but these guys don't need to feel shortchanged because their singing voices didn't fare well in their old age.

My sympathy is really for the loss of the voice, not the career, money, etc.

And yeah, Rod Stewart seems to have kept more of it. Of course, he never had anywhere near the range or precision of Garfunkel, but still.

Thinking how aging changes a singer's voice. Poor Art Garfunkel.

Yeah. Just back in the summer I bought for the first time in my life - knew it all from radio, never needed to own any of it - a Donavan album and enjoyed the nostalgia and the memories listening to it invoked.

I heard him a couple of weeks ago (you tube, mind you, but still disturbing) and I was almost "truamatized"  by just how not so Donovan he sounded.
Shit, even older than he, Eric Burdan, John Kay, Justin Hayward all sound about/not that far away from the same as they did in those ancient times.

Have yet to hear Garfunkel.

Well, listen to Paul McCartney. He sounds like a shadow of his former self. :(

But I really feel for Garfunkel. He so depended on his voice.

I bought Sir Paul's recent concert series on Blu-ray. He definitely surrounds himself with talent. The vid is worth watching, if not worth the price to own. I also, at the same time, bought a concert video collection from the Wings era. There IS a huge difference, but HEY! It's McCartney.

I plan on buying his newest, yet to be released, as well.

Oh, I will, too. It's McCartney, just as you say. :)

There's probably a great deal of truth in that. Once knew a person with a severe stutter, but could sing beautifully with no difficulty.

Thinking that UPS can be hardcore.

Five years ago, they bought a freight company and kept all the employees with the understanding that they were now UPS employees and subject to following the UPS handbook, like safety concerns.
Well these new guys are still acting like independents, won't wear the uniform, prefer their tennis shoes and cowboy boots, disable GPS trackers installed in the trucks (so they can take on short work, not UPS) and thumbing their noses at required safety issues. They have rejected the new contract passed by the existing union members.

This division of the company is planning to strike on Saturday in an effort to re-open contract negotiations. Something like two thousand drivers plan to walk out and begin forming picket lines all across the country, which no other union members are allowed to cross for their work.

Tomorrow, UPS is going to close the doors on that division, end it, fire around two thousand wiley drivers, re-paint the trucks, fix the onboard GPS systems, promote in house drivers to those very desirable, high paying jobs and hire many more to replace those promoted from the ranks.

This is going to cost them a small fortune, but it is truly hardcore.

The union contract has passed, guys. Deal with it or go home.

^^^ My buddy who was a FedEx Ground driver used to call UPS "The Brown Shirts".

Not too many people got the reference.

It sounds like a hellish place to work for if you ask me.

My buddy had to disable his GPS tracker to make deliveries for FedEx. There were consistent packages he had to deliver out to BFE. Instead of delivering them himself, he'd give them to a taxi driver he was friends with and gave her cash to deliver them. He actually made more money that way (didn't have to drive 15 miles out of his way in a gas guzzling delivery truck) and the customer always got their package.

The truth is, the corporate model for package delivery is often inefficient and a delivery driver who is resourceful and can improvise on the fly, does a better job for less money.

I guess if you're Mark Knopfler or Lou Reed then you never have to worry about losing your singing voice.

Yeah it is definitely a tough place and my sweet wife has managed to muscle over it all for seventeen years. In March she will only have two years to go in order to retire with full pay which will continue until her death.
Full payment is assessed at the time of her retirement - getting her to step down from her high paying job is going to be a corporate sanctioned goal over the coming two years. Bastards, they have done it to many others. They do not know how tough this old lady is though.

The super health care is only partially funded at that point, however. It takes thirty years of "service" to get that full benefit. We will have to find another type of med plan as a supplement.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has fallen and she can't get up!!

Apparently, she broke three ribs and injured her hip. She has been hospitalized. I knew she was old, but she is eighty five years of age.

Well, the Amber "exboyfriend drama" reached a peak last night.  Amber had cut off "Human", his legal name.  And so he decided to call Carla and left a rather threatening message on her voice mail.  Not wanting to "escalate things".  So against our better judgement, we urged Amber to meet with him and speak to him.....on the following conditions.  A) They will meet in a public place...the local YMCA open waiting room, B) he had 15 minutes to plead his case and then she would go to her Kung-Fu class.  Which he said ok.   And I would drive her there and stay until he arrived and was speaking with her and then I would leave to go outside.  Well, in a nutshell, we got there, he showed up and demanded Amber speak with him in a PRIVATE conference room.  Amber said an emphatic NO!  That she would only talk with him in the open lobby with witnesses and all that.  He would not isolate her.  I went outside as I heard her tell "Human" (aka David Montenegro)(Yes, I am doxxing him, but his name is readily available on line.) it's meet here or nothing.  10 minutes later I got a text from her to "Get in here".  Apparently he started to be threatening to Amber and the staff intervened.  The director of the Y and a coach took him upstairs to tell him to back off or leave.  The desk clerk was consoling Amber who was seriously distraught.  The staff told Amber that she did everything right.  They told him to leave...immediately.  They came back down stairs and he starts bullying her to talk with him privately, by then the Sensei or Kung Fu Teacher comes out and stand there as the female coach and female admin. stand between him and us.  Now the teacher stands there very quietly, arms crossed and keeps his eye on "human".  I feel myself getting more and more angry with him as I start to loudly say, "leave us alone, and go away"  more or less.  And I see this glint in "humans" eye that he loves seeing me escalate.  The same look on my "mothers" face when she nearly pushed my buttons to almost attack her during the big rift years ago.  I manage to ratchet myself down and repeatedly say, "go away and never speak to us again, it's over."  Then he starts in on me by saying lets talk, again, in a private room.  I say NO.  human keeps repeating the same thing over and over again.  Finally, the staff tells him in no uncertain terms to LEAVE the Y premises.  The Kung Fu teacher, then takes him outside for about 10-15 minutes to "speak" with him.  The upshot is, that "human" finally was persuaded to get on his bike and leave.  (He has no car)  Amber wants to forget class and go home.  Oh, but, before that, she goes into the class room during the confrontation to get away from him, "human" follows her. THEN the Teacher/Sensei takes him outside.   She tries to do the class, but, she is too upset to continue.  So the desk clerk, who has been very supportive and I talk and I go out to the car to get my book to read.  I am offered an escort, which I decline, I am not afraid of this jerktard.  I come back in and proceed to call the police to report the incident.  As I am on the phone, Amber and the teacher come out, and it's obvious...she is coming home.  The Kung Fu teacher is supportive and we leave.

I think this is the end of the issue......NOT.  At eleven at night, a police officer comes by, rings the bell and presents us with a form called, "Trespass Notice"  forbidding us to come near "humans" residence.....I start to laugh, the poor cop, who knows "human" very well looks embarrassed as he explains the form.  Apparently. "human" went directly to the police station to get this order in a fit of pique.  Now this is no problem to me and Amber, we sign it, the cop gives us our copies as we give our side of what happened.  "human" hates cops and he is always attacking them...(I will spare you the details) , so this just hits me as a petty and vindictive last ditch dig at us.  Carla and Amber have blocked his number on their phones.  So I go to bed and Carla who is still awake asks me what happened.  I give her the details and she starts to laugh with me at his petty and vindictive little swipe.   It's been nearly 24 hours and we haven't heard a peep more from him.  I signed up for the Kung Fu class with Amber as something I could us myself for mental discipline and control.

If this sounds confusing to you, put yourself in my shoes living this shit.  Either way, he is out of our lives and we are in control of the situation.
