*nod*  And it could be far worse, and is some places.  However, it's *getting* worse, and the US does have some unique quirks to our dysfunction (as would any country).

A part of the cultural issue here is the US's self-propaganda re: the "American Dream," which has elements of working your way up from nothing, having anything be possible, any child being able to grow up and be president, working and/or getting an education and working and then having a family in the 'burbs with a white picket fence.  (And other bullshit along those lines.)  Many of the baby boomers actually *did* live this, because for awhile, it was to some extent possible.  Some of the most central parts of our self-mythology as a country are going up in flames.

The part of the American dream that's bullshit isn't that it's unachievable. The bullshit is that people think that's what they should want out of life, that's the secret to contentment in life, the definition of success in life, and unhappiness will ensue if one doesn't achieve it. Younger generations have a lot more options than past generations. Currently have two children who openly admit the family and white picket fence in the burbs isn't what they want out of life. One in particular is currently struggling with this a great deal, mentally dooming themselves to a life of bitterness, loneliness, and unhappiness because of being somehow convinced that what they *should* want, and that's the definition of a fulfilling life. Can't for the foggiest understand why and wish I could help.

Thinking (as I have been more and more often lately) that I ought to lay off following the news until I'm less depressed.  I see enough poverty and oppression and human lives and decency gone awry at work.

Little point, really, to being well-informed if there's fuck-all I'm doing with that knowledge except getting into debates and freaking myself out, anyway.
