Wondering if the Appel reaction can be run in chloroform, or even dichlor, rather than carbon tet, which has been declared anathema by the powers that be as a carcinogen, and is now about as hard to obtain via commercial suppliers as fossilized unicorn shit.

Damn shame too, as its a very useful solvent for certain reactions, as it is very, very, very inert, even to some truly obnoxious, viciously reactive oxidizers, nasty ass fluorinated compounds etc. And is called for as a reagent, rather than solvent for the appel rxn (using CCl4 and triphenylphosphine to transform an alcohol to an alkyl halide. Nice mild rxn conditions..and I happen to have quite a lot of triphenylphosphine handy)

I run across all sorts of old banned chemicals that used to be commonly used at estate sales including carbon tet.  Mostly I leave it alone unless I have a use or I know I can sell it like freon.

I need some at the moment. Antique fire extinquishers, old dry cleaning fluid, halogenated solvents in general, if you are selling for a reasonable price, PM me, and chances are I'll take it.

In particular carbon tet though, its such a right royal bugger to buy these days, as next to nobody uses it, what with it being labelled persona non grata. Pretty pointless IMO. Why ban something for toxicity reasons...toxicity just means one needs to take proper precautions during handling and use. And there are FAR worse chemicals used widely. What next? no more HF, dimethyl sulfate, azides? a ban on cyanides?

Total pain in the arse. I've been wanting to run that Appel reaction, and really would rather not have to go about synthesizing the carbon tet from scratch.
