I like that red rock, it is unusual.

Looks like a piece of chert.

Looks more like cinnabar to me.

No, the texture is all wrong. cinnabar has a granular texture and is fairly soft.

The rock ricktard is holding is quite clearly a sedimentary rock that has spent some time in a stream being weathered.

That's why I say it's a piece of red chert. We have a lot of that stuff out here too.

If it's hard (can't scratch it with a nail) and slick, then it's red chert. Some types of red chert are called Jasper.

Here's a pic of red chert from geology.com

Jasper/agate/chalcedony are all forms of chert along with flint, radiolarite and onyx.

You should be able to find red chert in Santa Rosa too. We have a lot of it out here.

Really? I thought the rock picking was pretty slim out there but i really didnt venture out into the hills, or county. I imagine the beach in northen california, like around bodega bay would be a good place to find some jade? hopefully.

Yes, because chert often forms in limestone deposits. That whole area used to be a shallow sea, so there's lots of limestone.

Don't know about the jade, it's mostly found in metamorphic formations. Not very much metamorpic rock in that area.

Nice finds!

On the coke bottles, if the bottom has a four digit code, first 2 is the mold, last 2 should be the year.
